Focal speakers — No treble, tweeter distortion or tweeter damage

Focal speakers — No treble, tweeter distortion or tweeter damage

Is this the right article for you?

You're in the right place if you're experiencing any of the following from your Focal speakers:

  • Treble (high frequencies) is completely absent — the speaker sounds dull or muffled
  • Treble is distorted, harsh, or buzzing
  • High frequencies cut in and out intermittently
  • Treble comes back when you gently press near the tweeter
  • The tweeter surround (the thin ring around the tweeter dome) has come unglued or detached
  • The tweeter dome is visibly damaged — dented or pushed in

Before you contact us — three quick checks you can do at home

These checks take less than 5 minutes and will help our team assess your case much faster.

Check 1: Is only one speaker affected?

Play music through your system and listen to each speaker individually. If only one speaker has no treble, the fault is almost certainly isolated to that speaker's tweeter. If both speakers are affected simultaneously, the issue may be upstream (your amplifier or source).

Check 2: Check your amplifier's treble control

Make sure the treble control on your amplifier is not set to minimum, and that no EQ, tone, or DSP settings are reducing high frequencies. Try a flat/neutral setting if possible.

Check 3: Test with a different speaker cable

A damaged or partially connected speaker cable can cause high-frequency loss on one channel. Disconnect and reconnect your speaker cables firmly, ensuring no stray wire strands are causing a short. If you have a spare cable, try swapping it.

If only one speaker is affected and cables are fine, you almost certainly have a tweeter fault. Contact us with the information below and we'll take it from there.

Tweeter fault types — what to look for

  • No treble at all from one speaker: The tweeter voice coil has failed. A tweeter replacement is required.
  • Treble cuts in and out; returns when you press near the tweeter: This suggests a loose connection at the tweeter terminals — often a simpler fix that may not require a new part.
  • Treble is distorted or buzzy: Partial tweeter damage or surround detachment. A replacement is typically required.
  • Tweeter surround visibly unglued or lifting: Adhesive failure — this is a documented manufacturing defect on some models. A replacement is required under warranty.
  • Tweeter dome is dented or pushed in: Physical damage. A replacement is required, though this may be chargeable if accidental.

An important note about your amplifier

Tweeter failures can sometimes be caused by an amplifier being pushed beyond its limits, producing a distorted (clipped) signal that damages the tweeter's voice coil. This type of damage is not covered under warranty.

If you have been listening at very high volumes, or if your amplifier was producing distorted sound before the tweeter failed, please mention this when you contact us. We assess every case fairly. If you've been listening at normal volumes with a well-matched amplifier, this is almost certainly not relevant to your case.

What to expect from the repair process

  1. You contact us with the details below, including photos.
  2. We assess your warranty eligibility — most tweeter failures during normal use within 5 years (for passive speakers) are covered.
  3. If covered, we order the replacement tweeter from Focal France and arrange the repair.
  4. Tweeters are model and technology-specific — we'll confirm the right part for your speakers.
  5. Once the part arrives (typically 4–8 weeks from France), we arrange the repair or installation.

Frequently asked questions

My speakers are more than 2 years old — are tweeters still covered?

Focal passive speakers carry a 5-year warranty, not 2 years. If your speakers are within 5 years of original purchase and the failure occurred during normal use, you should be covered. Contact us with your proof of purchase.

I accidentally pushed in the tweeter dome. Can it be fixed?

Dented tweeter domes are not covered under warranty as they are considered accidental damage, but they can often be repaired. Contact us for a quote — depending on the tweeter type and severity, it may be repairable without a full replacement.

Can I replace the tweeter myself?

We strongly recommend against self-repair for tweeter replacements — incorrect installation can damage the crossover or the replacement tweeter, and will void the remaining warranty. Contact us and we'll arrange a proper repair.
